September 2015
Dear Parents,
This is an explanation of your child’s 5th grade independent reading program. Please refer to this material throughout the year as your child prepares his/her book projects. The independent reading program has two parts: the trimester independent reading goals and the assigned book projects/presentations.
Trimester Reading Goals
At the beginning of each trimester, you and your student will be required to decide on a realistic amount of pages your child will be able to read before the trimester ends. This goal will be accomplished through a minimum of 20 minutes of reading each night, in addition to silent reading time here at school.
After completing a book, the student must fill out a book coupon and have a five minute “book talk” with a parent or other adult. Following that, the student needs to answer any two of the questions you discussed on the coupon. The adult signs the coupon, and the student returns the coupon to his/her teacher to receive credit towards their trimester reading goal. Questions to help facilitate book talks, as well as sample book coupons, are on our website.
*You will be writing your trimester goals in the back of your Binder Reminder. Parents need to sign that they agree to this reading goal.
The Projects and Presentations
In addition to reading books that are self-selected by students, each fifth grade student will be responsible for creating four projects over the course of the year. These projects will focus on an assigned genre. Carol Halpern, our fabulous librarian, will assist students in choosing appropriate books as well as discussing the different genres with students. Books read for the book projects also count towards the trimester reading goal. It is expected that the books chosen for both the reading goals and the book projects are new reading material and are grade-level appropriate.
Thank you and happy reading!
